British Invasion at National Road Festival
During the middle of June, Illinois celebrates the National Road Festival, over 150 miles and 13 towns are involved in the events of the weekend. The National Road is also known as US-40 to many modern day drivers.
In the little town of Martinsville, IL, about 2 hours east of St. Louis, MO, was a weekend festival that concluded with a Car Show organized by Allen Lee on Sunday, June 15th, open to all makes and models of cars, trucks, motorcycles, and tractors. The “Best of” Trophies were made up by Allen Lee and Richard Beabout using actual paving bricks from repairs made to the National Road, and each trophy weighed 8 pounds. Entertainment was provided on Main Street by Steve Glendenny and friends, with the aid of an electric keyboard and sound system.
This year no tractors made the show, but one third of the 39 contestants were British. 13 British autos ranging from a 1953 Sunbeam Alpine MkI through a 1978 MGB were present. Best of Show in the British category went to Kirk Minster of Indianapolis, IN for his 1974 Jensen-Healey.
This writer was able to take some photos from a second floor apartment on Main Street to show the British metal dominating the show.
